An Attitude of Gratitude

I haven’t written in a while.
Actually, it’s been kind of a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve thought about it, it’s just that I haven’t been inspired. So when I sat down today to put words to paper, I took a moment to think about where that lack of inspiration came from.
That’s when it hit me.
My life has been somewhat uneventful in the last few weeks. Let me explain: I’ve certainly been enjoying myself. I’ve been spending time with friends, loving this weather, getting back to my running. But nothing bad has happened, nothing challenging has come my way.
And that’s when I wondered, why do I have to be in a hard place in order to write? So instead, I’m finding inspiration in gratitude.

Because the truth is, it doesn’t take much. It’s the simple things, really.
We forget often. We forget to look at all the beauty.
We get caught up in the parts of our experiences that scream, the ones that are incredibly loud and demand our attention.
The pain in our shoulders
The annoying co-worker
The sadness…
Those parts of our days that act like uncle bob after a few too many beers, demanding our undivided attention regardless of the importance.
These sensations, these thoughts, these emotions take up so much space that we forget to listen to the thousands of whispers beneath the shouting. We know they are there, all those layers of experience hiding in the background: slipping into a favourite pair of jeans, a warm cup of tea when it’s raining outside, the burst of flavour in those freshly picked berries.

I recently spent 10 days on vacation and all I could think of on our 16 hour drive home was that I didn’t want to go back to my routine. I love (and I mean LOVE) teaching yoga and owning a beautiful studio. But somehow I got lost in my experience of not being on vacation anymore.

And then it happened.

I turned the key in the lock and I was greeted by two dogs who were so incredibly happy to see me. There is nothing quite like coming home to furchildren who want nothing but to love you and who are so excited you’re back. (So excited in fact, one of them actually peed!)

And in that moment of joy, I felt deep in my bones what I’ve known all along, that there is so much to be grateful for.

So today, I’m inviting myself, and you, to look a little closer. I’m inviting all of us to pause a little longer, to linger at the rose bushes, to roll around in our clean sheets an extra moment or two, to relish in the joys that are all around us, every day.

So here is my list of gratitude for today:

Waking up cuddled between my dog and my loveimages
Feeling the cool breeze on my skin
Going for a run by the river
Listening to my favorite tunes
Sharing a meal with a beautiful new friend
Fresh baked sourdough bread
Getting my hands dirty making kimchi
Friendly folks with easy smiles
Walking through the grass barefoot
My love making me homemade pizza
Lingering an extra moment in the shower
The start to a weekend free of commitments

I could go on, really. My list could be pages long.

Once we start recognizing the magic, we realize it is all around us, always.
